Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Many people who have PTSD also experience problems with substance use, which is often used as a way to try to avoid memories and emotions of traumatic events. Because trauma symptoms and substance use problems are so connected, it can be helpful to treat both at the same time. Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) is an evidence-supported treatment that generally lasts around 12 sessions and combines the tools of two highly effective treatments to tackle both trauma and substance use symptoms.
